Even with all of today’s technology keeping us plugged in, this same technology has created more communication gaps than ever before. Acknowledging that more Americans of all ages are feeling overwhelmed and disconnected, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently rolled out a three-digit dialing and text code for people who are contemplating suicide to call for help. The Lifeline is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, every day of the week including holidays.
988 is the new, national suicide and crisis lifeline, which strengthens and expands the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Easy to remember, dial or text, and access, 988 is a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts or thoughts of hurting themselves, emotional distress, substance abuse or mental health crisis. For those who don’t have a smartphone, you can still access the Lifeline by dialing 988 or 1-800-273-8255 anytime, any day of the year.
Please note 988 in your phone and in those of your family as well as in your home. This crisis-care phone number provides a direct, life-saving service to Americans in need of compassion, understanding and guidance.
